Coffee Creek Watershed Conservancy, Inc

The Coffee Creek Watershed Conservancy, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization incorporated in 1998, owns and manages the natural areas and recreational facilities on the Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve.  Its mission is to protect and maintain the biodiversity of the Coffee Creek corridor and to provide educational and recreational experiences for the general public.

The Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve is a 157-acre complex of wetlands, woodlands, and prairies.  More than 400 native plant species have been identified on the property.  The magnificent display of wildflowers from spring through fall is one of The Preserve’s most notable features.  Many common mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and butterflies make their homes here, and there is a diverse birdlife, including both nesting and migratory species.  Coffee Creek is one of the healthiest streams in the southern Lake Michigan watershed.  Salmon, trout, and many other fish swim through and spawn in its waters.

The Preserve is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts.  A system of trails, including a three-mile loop around the perimeter, is popular with hikers, joggers, dog walkers, birders, and other nature lovers.  Photographers are attracted by the abundant wildlife and wildflowers.  Anglers find fishing in the creek excellent.

A variety of classes, workshops, and hikes are provided throughout the year for people of all ages.  Foot races and other fundraising events for local non-profits are often on the calendar.  The public is also invited to participate in volunteer workdays helping Conservancy staff with stewardship activities.

In addition to its natural bounty, Coffee Creek also boasts two outstanding outdoor venues for public and private events.  The Pavilion can be rented for picnics, family reunions, private and corporate parties, etc.  The Chesterton Amphitheater hosts municipal concerts, community theater productions, and wedding ceremonies.
